Reminder: The Federal Victim of Crime Act (VOCA) Needs Your Help!
The Pennsylvania allocation of a federal funding stream that helps finance the WAA Legal Center is expected to decrease by $3.3 million in 2009, resulting in major cuts for 2010. The VOCA Program funding makes up a significant part of the budget for many local agencies that provide direct services to victims of crime. VOCA funding could be cut dramatically because of President Bush’s request to rescind the VOCA balance.
Act today! Tell your Members of Congress to deny the President’s request to rescind the balance. Ask them to ensure that millions of crime victims get the services they need and the funding to keep programs open. Please tell them to increase the VOCA cap to $1 billion, which will not raise taxes, but rather allocate money already collected to meet the needs of crime victims.
To reach your Member of Congress, go to www.congress.org or call 202.224.3121.
Philadelphia Implements Victim Empowerment Tool
Victims of crime can sleep more soundly now that Philadelphia County has joined Pennsylvania’s Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification system (SAVIN).
The free 24-hour notification system allows victims to check their offender’s custody status to see whether the person is still in county jail, has been transferred, released or escaped.
Through this confidential program, individuals can call 1.866.9PA.SAVIN or visit www.pacrimevictims.state.pa.us for instant information on an offender’s status. Users can also register anonymously for notification within an hour of any change to the offender’s status.
Philadelphia District Attorney Lynne Abraham said the new system, which was launched May 14th, is the first step in an effort to include state prisons, where the more dangerous offenders are incarcerated.
