Supporter Spotlight: Dick MacKay

Dick MacKay knows the real reason for the holiday season – to bring hope to families in need. MacKay, a Credit Manager at Fretz Corporation, coordinates a toy collection each December for children living at the Women Against Abuse emergency shelter. Fretz employees have donated toys and other gifts to families at the emergency shelter for 12 years. Women Against Abuse recently chatted with MacKay about his long-time support in light of the fast approaching holiday season.

Employee Participation
“Fretz employees wanted to think of a place where our donations would really make a difference, and the whole idea was to bring presents to kids,” MacKay said.
Approximately 30 employees at Fretz’s Philadelphia branch contribute to the annual collection. MacKay and his colleague, Myra Malis, take the money raised to Toys R Us for a shopping spree for the children.
“We all get into the spirit here. We use the Women Against Abuse Holiday Wish List, which is great to have an idea of how many gifts to buy. We try to make sure there's something for everybody,” MacKay said.

Continued Support
So what motivates MacKay’s continued support?
“Too many people don't hear about abuse shelters or the good work they do,” he said. “When women are abused, what happens to the kids? Being in a shelter is not exactly the greatest thing in the world, so we figure let’s give to them and hopefully put a little smile on their faces.”

Hundreds Dish It Up for Women Against Abuse

Sampling tasty purple food and sipping lavender-infused cocktails, over 250 guests enjoyed the 2nd annual Dish It Up fundraiser and food competition. Between ticket sales, raffles, merchandise, and general donations, the event raised over $38,000 to support Women Against Abuse’s life-saving services for victims of domestic violence.
Nine female chefs and restaurant-owners competed for the first-ever Purple Dish Award, given to the chef with the most creative and delicious dish that incorporated the element of purple. This year’s winner was Jennifer Carroll, chef de cuisine at 10 Arts and current competitor on Bravo’s Top Chef (pictured above Jeannine L. Lisitski, Executive Director of Women Against Abuse).
Major sponsors included Phillies Charities, PRWT Services, Inc., and Stefanie Fleischer Seldin and Alex Seldin.
