Opening of New Playground Marks Start of Warm Weather Season at Emergency Shelter

Clients and staff at the WAA Emergency Shelter recently celebrated the opening of a new playground, a project graciously funded by the Nonprofit Finance Fund.

Agency Successes Highlighted in PBS Documentary

A few familiar faces tell the story behind WAA's continuum of care in a new documentary now airing on PBS.

Big Cities, Big Solutions, a Visionaries documentary highlighting urban issues, began airing on PBS affiliates nationwide in May. Production crews taped interviews with agency staff, former clients and supporters - including Mayor Michael Nutter - over a two-day period in September. Footage captured includes scenes from the emergency shelter and long-term housing program, as well as last fall's iPledge press conference.

Big Cities, Big Solutions will begin airing in Philadelphia on WHYY on June 14. To see if this broadcast is available through your provider, visit http://www.whyy.org/tv12/schedule.html

Group Increases Giving in Tough Economic Times

With today’s constant cuts in public funding, individual donations are more important than ever for WAA to continue to provide its life saving services. That’s why the agency was thrilled to benefit from the 11th annual fundraising event held by the Philadelphia Coalition for Labor Union Women (CLUW)!

CLUW members raised a total of $4,780 this year - $53 more than last year, despite the economic downturn. CLUW advocates for issues and programs that benefit working women, and holds a forum each year relating to different aspects and dynamics of domestic violence. This year’s forum focused on school violence and violence among teen dating relationships.

“It’s encouraging to see women stepping up and helping fellow women in this City,” said Christine Stutman, WAA’s Deputy Director. “CLUW is a long-time and dedicated supporter, and we are so grateful to them and the many other generous individuals who believe in our mission and services.”
